Answers to the most common questions. Can’t find yours? Email us at contact@loudowls.com and we’ll get back to you.
Which permissions does Underlay need, and why?
Camera — to show your camera behind your windows, in the camera bubble and in the Underlay Camera virtual camera.
Screen Recording — to record your screen and to capture computer audio, including the other side of a call.
Microphone — to record your voice.
Speech Recognition — to make transcripts and captions on your Mac.
macOS asks for each one the first time you use the feature that needs it. If you said no earlier, open System Settings › Privacy & Security, choose the permission, and turn on Underlay. You may need to quit and reopen Underlay afterwards.
“Underlay Camera” doesn’t show up in Zoom, Meet, Teams or OBS.
The virtual camera is a system extension, and macOS needs you to approve it once. Open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions, find Underlay under Camera Extensions, and turn it on.
Then quit and reopen the video app, and pick Underlay Camera as its camera.
Where are my recordings saved?
In the Movies folder in your home folder on your Mac. Recordings are never uploaded.
How do AI summaries work?
On Macs with Apple Intelligence, summaries are made on your Mac — nothing to set up.
You can also use Claude (Anthropic) or OpenAI with your own API key: add it in Underlay’s Settings. Only the transcript text is sent, only when you press Summarize and confirm, and directly from your Mac to that company. Your key is stored in your Mac’s Keychain. LoudOwls never sees your transcripts, summaries or key.
Do I have to pay again for updates?
No. Underlay is a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, with free updates for this version. There’s no subscription and no account.
